Not everyone is blessed with movie star looks, not even movie stars. (Anyone who knows about airbrushing, Photoshop, and camera angles knows this is true.) But, unless you are living in Africa amongst the Dobe !Kung (a special thank you to college Anthropology 5 for that reference) outward appearance means something to you. To some it is a source of pride, others extreme insecurity. And, thanks to popular culture, the rise of the tabloid, and Victoria Secret catalogs (not to mention those damn TV specials) the pressure to look good is strong.
Is this all shallow? Focused on the external? Maybe. But, we are all a product of our environment…like it or not. And, what I can tell you from my own experience is that when I feel that I look good the day just gets a little brighter. I feel more confident, more social, more outgoing, more fun. I want to talk people, laugh more, experience more. The exact opposite feeling of running into an ex-boyfriend, or even worse an ex’s new girlfriend, while you are sweaty at the gym in an old T-shirt with a crotch hole in your spandex and no Tic Tacs in sight.
Nothing makes me feel better than a chic outfit that is not only flattering, but perfect for the occasion. Not underdressed, not overdressed, just right. (Now, I have heard that you can never be overdressed and I often choose to err on the side of fashionable rather than casual. But, anyone who has seen satin at a baseball game or 4 inch heels on a bicycle will beg to differ, and I am with ya.)
I have always noticed that what makes an ordinary woman extraordinary is how she carries herself — her confidence (what we called self-esteem back in elementary school.) I know you all remember that girl in your life that really wasn’t all that special if you broke her physical appearance down by piece parts…but she was…simply because she believed she was. And, because she believed, we believed. Fashion has a way of making you believe. And, I know all of you have had one day or one evening that you believed you were beautiful…and you were.
The idea of this website was born almost 10 years ago, in my mind. When I had a specific occasion to attend I would put my Internet skills to work and search for pictures of people, often celebrities who invest in stylists, at those events trying to get inspiration. Sometimes I would find outfits I liked, but, of course I had no idea where to buy anything similar So, what good did it do me? Other than cause me to stare at my pitiful closet and curse it? And, if some of your more “seasoned” fashionistas may recall (and don’t worry if you 20 somethings don’t ), some people were afraid to buy things over the Internet at that time – hell, my mom is still afraid.
But, as time and technology progressed, it became clear that my dream could become a reality. And, here it is. A website/blog that will help you find fashions for very specific occasions for varying budgets. Day wedding? Cocktail party? Meeting your man’s parents for the first time? Showing off your new boobs? If I can think of it, I will style it, and hopefully entertain you at the same time.
