To Romp, Or Not To Romp? (Girls' Weekend)

Open Letter to My Sister:

Dear Sister,

I am sorry I made fun of you for buying a romper.  I know I snickered and asked you if you were going to wear Jessica Simpson wedges with it.  I couldn't help myself.  Rompers just remind me of...well rompers.  For children.  Little girls.  Not grown women. Stylish women.  But, I have to admit, you were right, they have grown on me.  They look comfortable...and cute.  And, isn't warm weather, girls' weekends, and poolside mai tais all about feeling cute?  Cute, carefree, and stylish.

So, to style a girls' weekend that involves sun, cocktails, and maybe some sand my quest for a romper began.  I knew a black romper was what I wanted to style for a girl's weekend poolside. There is not a lot of material so what you have going better be flattering.  My main concern: the hooch factor.  Yes, if not worn correctly a romper can make a more mature woman (30+) look like a woman on the prowl (i.e., too tight shorts and a tall platform heel).  An eyelet fabric could bring the feminine in and banish the hooch. Bingo! I found this perfect one from C&C California.

Accessorizing a romper takes some precision, in my opinion. I chose to keep this one casual with a flat, light cardigan, and olive bag.  Of course, you could dress it up a bit with a heel if you want the height or are anti-flat -- but stick to an espadrille or wedge to keep it more casual.

Click on any of the individual items in the look to purchase it from the retailer's website.

If you do want a heel and more sass, the wedge below is a steal and a lot of fun. (Too high for me at 4 1/2 inches, though.)  You would need to tweak the color palette a bit (particularly the bag) but have fun and get creative!

  1. Super cute! Yes, not hoochie at all and I love the 4.5" wedge. What a great price!

  2. I secretly wish I could be a romper girl. I can't so instead I hate on them like the sister email.

What is the short, busty girls equivalent to a romper?
